When I read reports from the “Mediterranean Death Zone” which merchant ships and warships circumnavigate so as to “overlook” drownings, or when I follow German climate policy, which half-heartedly decides the things that are already making it impossible to stop global warming, then I ask myself whether it isn’t high time to join an aid organisation myself rather than stand on the sidelines. What am I still doing here?!
As my Swabian grandmother would say, “a cobbler should stick to his last!” Rather than navigating a rescue cruiser or pursuing European policy, I am a “business pilot”, however. Consulting flows through my veins and it’s what drives me, day and night: whether it’s honing the strategy, the most functional organisational structure, the most adequate management model or the further development of the leadership: what’s the right answer so that my clients’ companies can stay fit for the future?
That the profession also has parallels with flying and that it’s traditionally about profit and growth rather than the greater good and sustainability?
That’s right! So I stretch myself according to our Purpose and have made meaning into my field of research. In our book, we show why meaning is the answer to increasing complexity, and that a “side effect” of this clear contribution by an organisation means growth, profit and satisfied employees for others. Money follows meaning! And if that isn’t a marketing fig leaf, but a central guiding star, organisations can unfurl the power to shape our future.
What keeps me at my last are my clients. That’s because they’re intelligent, funny and just as demanding as I am. And because they know that consulting can’t be a “deliverable” product.
Why I ask myself the question of the “last” at all? Because our second child has just been born and my children have shown me that I don’t have to be a user of the planet, but an enabler for life.
